One of the most asked features for msec was to provide a “summary” screen, which could show the current state of system security to the user without making him go through all the possible security options and system tools.
Since today, this features was added to msecgui, showing the summary for three of the most important parts of system security: the firewall status, security overview and status of system updates.
Of course, we all know that it is cooker version, and it is by no means final point on the UI design and functionalities
. And, as usual, comments are more than welcome!

That’s great !
It would have been interesting to point out when sometyhing is disabled ( red icon, … ). This could be something like draknetcenter.
IMHO security is too generic.
What about this : 1. keep Security 2. use something like in draknetcenter : by clicking on a little arrow, we can see further settings appearing.
For security security will show : System integrity ( enabled/disabled/failed ), Accounts security ( e/d/f ), Root users restrictions, Automatic Security checks.
For Updates, we could show the number of updates to install ( IIRC urpmq can give the list of package to update )
For Firewall, we could show : opened port list, Interactive Firewall ( enabled/disabled/pending alerts )

Excellentissimous !
great, great great! eugeni, you’re a great developer, mandriva users will be gracefully to you
keep it on this way

a little tray icon w/ status might be nice to have
I’d like to have a tray icon, but we already have many icons there by default, and a general consensus about it on cooker mailing list was “no way”
.
I don’t see the use of the number of firewall rules… A summary could tell us about common ports like SSH, HTTP… enabled/disabled
Update summary could tell if new updates are available.
As for the icon, you could mix it with mdkapplet one, see https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=57016

The cooker ML is a rather conservative bunch of powerusers, ask on the forum and I believe you will get a very different answer.
Eugeni, found a typo in one of your scripts in /usr/share/msec/scripts/*sh . For all these scripts, on line 9, you should have “exit” instead of “return”… I’ve tried to launch one of them manually, and although I’ve gotten the error message, the script continued to run because of this typo…
@yoho indeed! Thanks for noticing!
eugeni, would you be nice enough to have this fix released as an official update for 2010.0…
